The Path to an Erasmus Exchange Semester

1. The Exchange Opportunities

Where are exchange opponities announced?

The FU does not have a central call for applications for Erasmus study programs abroad. It is required that you apply directly to the institute or department for an exchange spot.

The available Erasmus+ exchange places and application deadlines are generally announced at the institutes or departments, either through postings or on the websites.  When are exchange opportunities announced?

Exchange opportunities are generally announced between the end of October until mid-November. Application deadlines are usually between December and March of the following academic year.

A direct overview of the application deadlines and documents for studying abroad can be found here.

2. The application:

The calls for applications issued by the departments and academic programs specify which documents you must submit with your application; generally, these include at least the following: online application, resume, statement of purpose, academic transcripts from your previous studies, and proof of enrolment; additionally, proof of language proficiency and, if applicable, a letter of recommendation from a professor or instructor.

Please direct any specific questions regarding the application or selection process, as well as questions about your choice of university or the recognition of academic credits earned abroad, to the Erasmus coordinators in the departments and academic programs. You can apply for a spot based on your major or the available modules.

Exchange places are offered on a subject-specific basis. This means that FU students can apply for exchange places at the FU institute where their degree program is offered. Exchange places at other institutes are not available.
Only students studying multiple subjects at different institutes have the option to apply for exchange places at different institutes. The exchange spots at the institute where your major is offered, as well as the exchange spots at the institute where your module program is offered.

Students enrolled in the following programs: BA (including teacher training) in German Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Italian Language and Literature, Portuguese-Brazilian Studies, Spanish Language and Literature, and Language and Society, as well as MA in Linguistics, may also apply for Erasmus+ spots through the Language Center.

3. Selection:

Erasmus students are selected by the Erasmus coordinators of the respective departments. In most cases, it is customary to interview the candidates about their motivation and study intentions at the partner university as part of selection process. The interview may be held, at least in part, in the language of the host country.

The selection criteria include the following:

-          Quality of the motivation letter

-          Motivational authenticity for the study abroad

-          Individual coursework

-          Engagement at the department/ social commitment

-          Language skills

Please note that students with disabilities or with accompanying minors may receive special consideration in line with the objectives of the DAAD.

4. I received a spot- what’s next?

The Erasmus coordinators will send out provisional confirmations to all selected candidates, and the host university will receive a nomination. The nomination informs the partner university about which students have been selected and includes information about the length, level, duration and subject of stay.

Please read through our website for more information about the Erasmus+ mobility grant immediately after you receive a confirmation.

Please note:

Usually the partner university will contact you by mail after your Erasmus+ coordinator has nominated you. Nevertheless, please inform yourself in advance on the websites of the partner universities about their application process, especially about application deadlines and which documents you have to submit, so that you can do this pro-actively in case you do not receive the e-mail from the partner university.

Please respond quickly to the informational email sent by the partner university, which may ask you to apply online or fill out additional forms for housing or language courses, for example.

If you need an English Transcript of Records for the application at the partner university, you can find out here where to apply for it.
